Patient Discharge Soft Tissue Surgery

Your pet underwent soft tissue surgery at Allure Surgical Center and received pain medications during this procedure. You will need to continue pain control and any other medications that were recommended in accordance with your specific discharge instructions.

Instructions:

The most important part of your pet’s recovery will be restriction from significant exercise. Please do not allow any running, jumping or playing for the next two weeks. When not under direct observation, please restrict them to a small area such as a large kennel or small room. Walks outside should be on a leash, and last for less than ten minutes. Stairs should be minimized, although they are allowed if necessary, on a leash in a controlled manner.

Please monitor the incision for any redness, swelling or discharge. Do not allow your pet to lick, chew or otherwise traumatize the incision. Please keep the provided E-collar in place until the suture removal.

If your pet will tolerate it, a medical ice pack (purchased from a human pharmacy) can be placed over the surgical site as often as every 4 hours for 3-5 days following discharge from the hospital. Please use a clean, dry cloth placed over the surgical site to provide a barrier between the skin and the ice pack. It is important to have a cloth barrier between the ice pack and skin to prevent any trauma to the skin. Some animals find this comforting and it does reduce inflammation and swelling which leads to pain.

Please tempt your pet to eat at home. Please monitor for any signs of illness such as vomiting, severe lethargy, or lack of appetite lasting more than 24-48 hours. If these occur, please call us.

It is common, due to the anesthesia and pain medications, to see no bowel movement for up to five days. If your pet does not have a bowel movement in longer than five days, please contact our office. You may supplement your pet’s diet with 1/4 – 1/2 can of canned pumpkin with each meal for the next few days to increase fiber intake if you would like.

If biopsy samples and/or culture samples were collected, results will return in approximately 3-5 business days and our team will contact you.

Please follow all individual instructions regarding bandage changes and follow up visits. Protect your investment. Do not miss the recommended follow ups and treatments as it can lead to infections and surgery failure.
